HISTORY, FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS OF HOCKEY IN NIGERIA

INTRODUCTION

Hockey is a sport in which two teams play against each other by trying to maneuver a ball into the opponents side using a hockey stick. There are different types of hockey such as field hockey and ice hockey.

HISTORY OF HOCKEY IN NIGERIA

Hockey game was introduced into Nigeria by European in 1928, who introduced and played the game in various schools and colleges in the country.

Hockey became regular feature in inter-house sport competitions of Kings College, Igbobi College and St. Gregorys College, and with some army unit teams, friendly matches were being conducted.

The Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF) is the governing body of Field Hockey in Nigeria. It is affiliated to IHF International Hockey Federation and AHF African Hockey Federation. The headquarter of NHF is in Abuja, Nigeria.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

The hockey stick and ball

The protector (helmet/facemask with mouth guard, neck guard, shoulder/elbow/shin pads, gloves, paint)

TABLE TENNIS

Table tennis is one of the major sports in the world. It is played at all levels of competition. Both young and old people play the game but at world championships, it is a young persons game. The game is played by a minimum two people in form of singles and maximum of four people in form of doubles or mixed doubles.

The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net.

HISTORY OF TABLE TENNIS IN NIGERIA

Unconfirmed reports had it that the game had its origin in the kitchen, played between Mum and Dad with potatoes used as balls and frying pans used as bats and played across the table.

Table Tennis was introduced in Nigeria in the early Thirties by British. In Nigeria, table tennis is played everywhere among people of all ages and sex. It is popular among students in the Universities, colleges, and post primary schools. Nigeria has continued to take active part in the competition at both national and international levels.

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) was formed 1951.

Basic Table Tennis Rules

The service must start with the ball in an open palm. ...

The ball must be thrown vertically, at least 16 cm. ...

The ball must be above and behind the table throughout the serve.

After throwing the ball, the server must get their free arm and hand out of the way.
